ecology Flashcards
(10 cards)
Abiotic factors
are non-living factors
Example of Abiotic factors
-moisture level
-light intensity
-temperature
-carbon dioxide level
- wind intensity
-oxygen level
Biotic factors
are living factors
Example of Biotic factors
-new predators
- new pathogens
-competition
-availability of food
A change in environment for biotic factor
can affect the size of populations in a community which can hae knock-on effects because of interdependence
A change in environment for abiotic factor
can affect the size of populations in a community also. This means they can also affect the population sizes of other organisms that depend on them
Plants turn elements like carbon, oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen from the soil and the air into
Complex compounds ( carbohydrates, protein and fat ) that make up living organisms
Materials decay when they’re broken down by microorganisms
This happens faster in warm moist , aerobic conditions
The constant cycling of carbon is called the carbon cycle
CO2 is removed from the atmosphere by green plants and algae during photosynthesis. When the plants and algae respire . Some carbon is returned as CO2
When the plants and algae are eaten by animals
Some carbon becomes becomes part of the fats and proteins in their bodies .
The carbon then moves through the food chain
