Ecology Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is the definition of ecology?
The study of how organisms interact with their environment
What are the 2 interacting components in an environment?
Abiotic and biotic factors
What are the 4 different levels of ecology?
Organismal, population, community, ecosystem
What is a biome?
Major groups of plant and animal life
What does global distribution depend on?
Temperature and moisture
What is productivity of an environment?
How much biomass an environment can support
Why is there patterns in climate?
Earths curvature
What is adiabatic cooling?
As air rises, it expands and cools, and cold air hold less moisture which leads to condensation and rain
Why is it wet at equator and and dry at 30°C?
Review hadly cells
Where do hadly cells occur?
Every 30° lattitude N and S of the equator
What are seasons caused by?
The earths tilt
What is water used to help?
Stabilize temperature
Where does the most productivity take place in a body of water?
The photic zone
What is the photic zone?
Where enough light penetrates for photosynthesis to occur
What is upwelling?
Increased coastal productivity by bringing nutrient rich water to the surface
