Ecology Communities Flashcards
(19 cards)
What is the definition of community ecology?
The study of species interaction
What is a community?
A set of interacting species that share the same environment
What is competition?
Using the same limiting resources(-/-)
What is a ecological niche?
A species role in environment, range of resources and requirements
What is a niche?
the range of resources a species uses/tolerates
When does competition happen?
When niches overlap
What are the consequences of competition?
1.Competitive exclusion by superior competitor
2. Weaker competitor is forced into realized niche
What is a fundamental niche?
Niches that are broader than realized niches
What is consumption?
When one organism eats another. (+/-)
What is mulleiran mimic?
Dangerous species look similar
What is a batesian mimic?
Harmless species that look similar to harmful
What is mutualism?
When both species benefit (+/+)
What is commensalism?
One species benefits and the other has no effect(+/0)
What is a keystone species?
A species that has a disproportionally large effect on their community
What is succession?
Community change over time in a single place.
What is primary succession?
Soil is destroyed
What is a disturbance?
Event that destroys biomass
What are pioneer species?
Short lived, weedy plants
What is a climax community?
When competitive species exist
