ecology Flashcards
(15 cards)
Ecology
The study of the interactions between organisms and the living and nonliving components of their environment
Order of groups from smallest to largest
Organism, Population, community, ecosystem, biome, biosphere
Population
All the members of a species found in a given area
Community
All the populations of diff species found in a given area
Ecosystem
A community (living things) and the non-living parts of the environment interacting and functioning together in a given area
Biome
Large geographic area sharing similar environment
Biosphere
The portion of Earth in which life exists
Stable ecosystem requirements
Constant supply of energy (usually sun), Recycling of materials between organisms and the environment (decomposers), Autotrophs
Food chain
Sequence of who eats whom in an ecosystem
Food web
Many interconnected food chains in one diagram
Heterotroph
Humans, animals, obtain food from environment
Density Dependent Limiting factor
A limiting factor that depends on how many organisms there are, only a problem if populations are large (EX: competition, lack of water)
Limiting factor
A factor in an environment that stops populations from growing forever
Tiaga
dense coniferous trees, cold, Canada and Russia
Grassland
Poor soil, baboa trees
