Ecology final test Flashcards
(32 cards)
What are biotic components in an ecosystem
Living parts like plants animals fungi and bacteria
What are abiotic components in an ecosystem
Nonliving parts like sunlight water air soil and temperature
How do biotic and abiotic parts help the ecosystem
Biotic parts form food chains and interact while abiotic parts control where life can grow and survive
What are the 4 spheres of Earth
Atmosphere air Hydrosphere water Lithosphere land Biosphere life
How do Earth’s spheres work together
Living things need air water and land to survive and all parts affect each other
What is a producer
An organism that makes its own food usually plants
What is a consumer
An organism that eats other organisms
What is a herbivore
An animal that eats only plants
What is a carnivore
An animal that eats only other animals
What is an omnivore
An animal that eats both plants and animals
What is a scavenger
An animal that eats dead animals
What is a decomposer
Organisms like fungi and bacteria that break down dead things
What is a predator
An animal that hunts and eats other animals
What is prey
An animal that is hunted and eaten
What is a population
A group of the same species living in the same area
What is a habitat
The natural home of a plant or animal
What is a niche
The role an organism plays in its environment
What is an ecosystem
A community of living and nonliving things working together
What is a trophic level
A level in a food chain like producer or consumer
What is carrying capacity
The largest number of organisms an environment can support
How does energy move in a food chain
It starts from the sun then moves to plants to herbivores and then carnivores while energy is lost at each step
What is the carbon cycle
Plants take in carbon dioxide animals eat the plants and carbon is released through breathing and decomposing
What is the nitrogen cycle
Bacteria change nitrogen gas into a form plants can use and it moves through the food chain and returns to the soil
What is photosynthesis
A process where plants use sunlight water and carbon dioxide to make oxygen and sugar
