• wanted to create equal opportunity for all students with one type of school

• grammar/ secondary still existed
• labelling and streaming created inequalities
•little parentocracy
The Comprehensive School
- Tripartite system abolished
- LEA controlled local schools
Functionalist view of Comprehensive Schools
• promotes social integration - brings social classes together
• meritocratic - gave longer period to show abilities
marxists more of Comprehensive Schools
• not meritocratic - make unequal achievement seem fair
• reproduce class inequalities through labelling and streaming
• failure faults individual
Vocational Education
industrialisation led to need of skilled workers where they learn through practical skills
Vocational Education
industrialisation lead Britain needing skilled and literate workers and needed education focused on skill crafts
