Doings of Jenner
A
- Used observation from milk maids not getting smallpox, but a less severe version called cow pox to create vaccine for smallpox by inoculating cowpox.
- Experimented in depth to ensure vaccines were viable (e.g. James Phipps and 23 others).

Significance of Jenner
A
- Safer alternative to inoculation.
- Led to eradication of smallpox in 1979.
- Later explained and built on by Pasteur and Koch to make other vaccinations.

Insignificance of Jenner
A
- Opposed by many (e.g. church saw it as unnatural to use animal diseases to treat humans, royal society were skeptical and inoculators opposed this in fear of losing profit).
- Idea was not essentially new (e.g. inoculation)
- Lack of understanding why vaccinations worked which meant other scientists weren’t able to build on ideas and other diseases could not be treated.
