Impact of the coup against Somerset
Warwick (Northumberland) became more well known and prominent within government.
He became president of the council. His main supporters were conservatives.
Somerset’s second coup
Somerset attempted to re-accumulate his position within the government, being assisted by Paget. Somerset was stopped and Paget was imprisoned. Somerset executed.
Impact of Somerset’s second coup
Used the second coup as an opportunity to strengthen his control. Moved away from a councillor government and ruled like Somerset had done.
Changes made by Northumberland
Promoted himself to Duke of Northumberland. Gave John Gates the patronage of ‘Vice-Chamberlain of the Household’ - this further confirmed his control over the court.
How did John Gates and Northumberland gain even more power?
John Gates possessed the ‘Dry Stamp’ so they could place a wax seal on documents, this was the King’s signature.
