Effects Of Forces Flashcards
(16 cards)
List some scalar quantities
Distance, speed, time, mass, temperature, area, volume, length
What is a scalar quantity?
A scalar quantity has only magnitude
What is a vector quantity?
A vector quantity has both magnitude and direction
List some vector quantities
Displacement, velocity, weight (force), acceleration, pressure, momentum
Define the term Newton
Newton is the force that would accelerate 1kg mass at 1m/s2 (squared)
F=ma
Work out the resultant force of a hot air balloon with a force of 8000N up and 4000N down
8000-4000=4000N upwards
What is the equation for acceleration?
A = v-u/t
What does the acceleration of an object depend on?
Mass of the object
Force applied to it
What is the equation for weight?
W = m x g (weight = mass x acceleration due to gravity)
What is the gravitational field strength?
The gravitational field strength is a measure of how strong the gravitational pull on an object is
What happens to something when it is falling?
The weight of the object never changes during its fall but the drag force increases as the objects velocity increases
What is terminal velocity?
When the velocity will no longer increase
What does the size of the air resistance depend on?
Surface area
Velocity
What is the equation for stopping distance?
Stopping distance = thinking distance + breaking distance
What is the equation for thinking distance?
Thinking distance = thinking time x speed
What happens to thinking distance and breaking distance as speed increase?
As speed increases both breaking distance and thinking distance increases
