Waves Flashcards
(27 cards)
What is a wavelength?
Wavelength is the distance from one peak to the next
What is frequency?
Frequency is how many complete waves there are per second
What is frequency measured in?
Hertz
What is amplitude?
Amplitude is the height of the wave
How is speed measured?
Velocity, V
What is the period?
The period (T) is the time it takes for one complete wave to pass a point
What is the equation for frequency?
F=1/T
What is the equation for wave speed?
Wave speed = frequency x wavelength
What are the difference types of waves?
Transverse and longitude
What are transverse waves?
In transverse waves the vibrations are at 90 degrees to the direction energy is transferred by the wave
Give examples of properties of transverse waves
Light
A slinky spring wiggled up and down
Waves on strings
Ripple on water
What are longitude waves?
In longitude waves the vibrations are along the same direction as the wave transfers energy
Give examples of longitude waves
Sound and ultrasound
Shock waves
A slinky spring when you push the end
What is the law of reflection?
The angle of incidence = The angle of reflection
What is the frequency range for human hearing?
20 Hz - 20,000 Hz
What is a use of radio waves?
Broadcasting and communication
What is a use of microwaves?
Cooking an satellite transmission
What is a use of infrared?
Heaters and night vision equipment
What is a use of visible light?
Optical fibres and photography
What is a use of ultraviolet?
Fluorescent lamps
What is a use of x-rays?
Observing the internal structure of objects and materials and medical applications
What is a use of gamma rays?
Sterilising food and medical equipment
What can microwaves do to the human body?
Internal heating of body tissue
What can infrared do to the human body?
Skin burns
