Elbow Ligaments and Muscles Flashcards
Radial collateral ligament
Attachments and Function
Attached to the margin of the trochlear notch of the ulna, and it encircles the head of the radius.
It keeps the head in contact with the radial notch of the ulna.
Ulnar collateral ligament
Attachments and Function
The ligament originates from the medial epicondyle of the humerus and inserts at the medial border of the coronoid process (front portion) and to the olecranon process of the ulna (back portion).
It prevents excessive abduction of the elbow.
Annular ligament
Attachments and Function
It attaches to the margins of the radial notch and blends with the capsule and lateral ligament.
It prevents the outward dislocation of the head of radius in movement of the elbow joint
Carrying angle?
5-15 degrees. It allows your forearms to clear your hips when you swing your arms.
Flexors
Biceps brachii
Brachialis
Brachioradialis
Pronator teres
Biceps brachii
Attachments
Long head: supraglenoid tubercle of scapula and glenoid labrum / Short head: apex of coracoid process to posterior part of radial tuberosity
Brachialis
Attachments
Lower half of anterior surface of humerus, intermuscular septum to the coronoid process and tuberosity of ulna
Brachioradialis
Attachments
Lateral supracondylar ridge of humerus, lateral intermuscular septum to the lateral side of radius above styloid process
Pronator teres
Attachments
Humeral head: medial condyle and intermuscular septum
Ulnar head: medial part of coronoid process
To middle of lateral surface of radius
Extensors
Triceps brachii
Anconeus
Triceps brachii
Attachments
Long head: infraglenoid tubercle of scapula
Lateral head: above and lateral to spiral groove on posterior surface of humerus
Medial head: below and medial to spiral groove on posterior surface of humerus
to upper surface of olecranon
