Lab - 43.0% with 287 seats
The defeat came to a surprise to Wilson and it could be argued that Labour lost rather than the Conservatives won

Labour increased they majority over the Conservatives to 42 but they only had a majority of 3 seats overall. This was enough to govern with a small majority
