Q

What was the entry into the EEC like?

A
  • Heath managed to negotiate the entry of Britain into the EEC. This was following the retirement of De Gaulle in 1969.
  • It was always very likely that Britain was now to be
    accepted
  • Britain was not negotiating from a position of strength
  • Heath believed that Britain needed to join in order to survive economically
  • Any thought that Britain was a ‘great power’ able to act on its own seemed to disappear that when it entered the EEC on unfavourable economic terms
  • Britain’s entry to the EEC coincided with the oil crisis
  • Any economic benefits to join were outweighed by the result of the rising oil prices
