Electricity - Electrical Sources and Internal Resistance Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is EMF?
The energy supplied to one coulomb of charge passing through the supply
What is internal resistance?
The resistance the battery itself has
What is lost volts?
The voltage that develops across the internal resistance, it is not available to the circuit
What is terminal potential difference?
The energy per unit charge available at the output of the battery
What is an open circuit?
A circuit in which there is no current flowing
What is short-circuit current?
The maximum current that can pass through a circuit
What happens in short circuits?
R=0
What happens when current in a circuit is increased?
The energy lost in supply due to heating will increase so lost volts increases and tpd decreased
Steps of experiment to find EMF and internal resistance
- Variable resistor is altered and readings of potential differences across the terminals of the cell and current through the cell are taken
-a graph of results is drawn
