Particles and Waves - Spectra Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the Bohr model of the atom?
A small, positively charged central nucleus and electrons orbiting in at specific energy levels.
What is the ground state?
The lowest energy level
When an electron is at infinity it will have…
Zero potential energy
What does it mean when an electron is in excited state?
It has gained enough energy to move to higher energy levels
When does ionisation occur?
When electrons gain so much energy that they are no longer considered to be orbiting the atom
When is line emission spectra produced?
When each electron transition will produce a photon of different frequency and colour
When is continuous emission spectra produced?
When electrons are shared between many atoms, giving a huge range of possible frequencies
How is absorption spectra produced?
By photons passing through a gas, if photons have the same energy as energy gaps in atoms they can be absorbed
What do absorption lines provide evidence for?
For the composition of the sun’s outer atmosphere
