Electrolysis Flashcards
(10 cards)
Describe what happens during the electrolysis of lead(II) bromide
Substance is heated, the ionic bonds break and they ions are free to move
The positively charged lead ions will attract to the negative cathode
The negatively charged bromide ions will be attracted to the positive anode
Bromine gas is then released
State a possible electrode material and describe why it is useful
Graphite, as it is inert
What are positively charged ions called
Cations
What are negatively charged ions called
Anions
What is electrolysis
Using electrolysis to break down an ionic compound
What is oxidation
Loss of electrons
What is reduction
Gain of electrons
Describe the process of electrolysis of aqueous solutions
Hydrogen and hydroxide ions are present
Hydroxide ions are attracted to the anode and transformed into water and oxygen
How do you know which ions will undergo change
If the metal is less reactive than hydrogen, it will be formed
How can you predict the products at the anode
If halides are present, they will be oxidised
If not, hydroxide will be oxidised
