What occurs when bonds are broken
An endothermic reaction due to the release of energy being less than the energy used to break the bonds
Positive enthalpy change
What occurs when bonds are made
Exothermic reaction as the energy is released is greater than the energy required to make the bonds
Negative enthalpy change
What is the formula for enthalpy change
Total energy absorbed to break bonds - total energy released in making bonds
What does the reaction profile for an exothermic reaction show
Curve goes from high to low from reactants to product
What is a reversible reaction
Products of the reaction can react together to convert back into the original reactants
Forwards and backwards reactions
What is dynamic equilibrium
Equilibrium within a closed system where the rate of the forward reaction is equal to that of the backwards reaction, resulting in a cancelling out
How does altering the temperature effect a reversible reaction
Endothermic reaction increases to use more heat if temperature is increased
Exothermic reaction increases to release more heat if temperature is increased
How does altering pressure effect a reversible reaction
If you increase pressure, the reaction that produces fewer moles of gas will be encouraged
Why does adding a catalyst have no effect on the point of equilibrium
Because it increases the rate of both the forward and reverse reaction by the same amount
