Elements and compounds Flashcards

(13 cards)

1
Q

Compound

A

A compound is a substance with two or more types of atoms which are chemically bonded together

In compounds, atoms are held together with strong chemical bonds. Compounds are therefore difficult to separate due to their chemical bonds. .Elements can only be separated out from compounds by a chemical reaction

Q

What are the two types of molecules. A little information on both

A

Elemental: a molecule made of atoms of the same elements chemically bonded, same-sized atoms.

Molecules of a compound: a molecule made of two or more different elements.

Q

Difference between a molecule and compound

A

A molecule is a group of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds. A compound is a substance which is formed by two or more different types of elements which are united chemically in a fixed proportion. A molecule is the chemical

Q

Atom number- where is it found, how is it counted

A

Number of protons in a nucleus of an atom. This number is used to define elements.

Q

Atom mass- how is it counted

A

atomic mass is the average number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom. Electrons are not counted in the atomic mass because they are so small that they have almost no effect on the mass. atomic mass is the average mass of all atoms of a single element.

Q

What arrangements can elements be found in

A

As single atoms, called monatomic substances.

As groups of chemically bonded atoms, called molecules.

As large, three-dimensional grids, called lattices.

Q

What is a lattice

A

repeating structure of atoms, a solid structure of atoms. It contains only one type of bond, and therefore cannot be separated into individual molecules, rather separated into atoms
