Physical and chemical change Flashcards
(11 cards)
What are reactants
Go into chemical reactions
What are products
Come out of chemical reactions
Example of product and reactant
Water can be broken down by electricity to form Hydrogen and Oxygen.
Water - Hydrogen +Oxygen
(Reactant/s) - (Product/s)
What is a physical change
Physical changes occur when the chemical bonds between the substances remain the same.
A change of the substance physical properties.
No new substances are produced in a physical change and are often reversible.
What is an example of a physical change
Breaking, bending, twisting, crushing or compressing, mixing, and dissolving
What is a chemical change
A change of materials into another, a new substance is formed (one or more). Chemical bonds are broken and new ones are formed. They are often irreversable.
When a particle is heated is more or less energy produced

What is the difference between physical and chemical change
Physical changes do not break or make new bonds, only the physical appearance changes, however chemical change breaks and forms new bonds creating a new substance. Chemical changes cannot be reversed while physical changes can be reversed.
Example of a chemical change
Burning, cooking, rusting, rotting
What happens to particles during a chemical change?
Bonds break and new bonds form, creating a new substance.
Signs of a chemical change
Formation of a new gas
Disappearance of a solid
Change in temperature
Change in colour
Production of light or sound
Odour
