Elements, Compounds & Mixtures Flashcards
(23 cards)
What is an element?
A pure substance made of only one type of atom.
How many elements are there?
118 (that we know of, all of them are on the Periodic Table).
Give two examples of elements.
Oxygen (O), Iron (Fe)
What is a compound?
A substance made from two or more different elements that are chemically bonded.
How are compounds different from mixtures?
In compounds, elements are chemically bonded; in mixtures, they’re just mixed.
Give two examples of compounds.
Water (H₂O), Carbon dioxide (CO₂)
Can compounds be broken down?
Yes, only by a chemical reaction.
What is a mixture?
A substance made from two or more different elements that aren’t chemically bonded.
Is saltwater a compound or a mixture?
A mixture (salt dissolved in water).
Can mixtures be separated? How?
Yes! By physical methods like filtration, evaporation, or distillation.
Give two examples of mixtures.
Air, salad
What does the particle diagram of an element look like?
All the same type of atom.
What does the particle diagram of a compound look like?
Atoms of different types chemically joined in a set ratio.
What does the particle diagram of a mixture look like?
A mix of different atoms and/or molecules not bonded.
What is the Periodic Table?
A chart that shows all known elements arranged by atomic number.
What is an atom?
The smallest part of an element that still has that element’s properties.
What do all atoms of the same element have in common?
The same number of protons.
What holds atoms together in a compound?
Chemical bonds (like covalent or ionic bonds).
Why do compounds have different properties than the elements they’re made of?
Because bonding changes how the atoms behave together.
Is water (H₂O) the same as hydrogen and oxygen gases?
No — it’s a new substance with new properties.
Can mixtures include solids, liquids, and gases?
Yes, any combination is possible (e.g., air = gas mixture, soil = solid mixture).
What is a solution?
A special type of mixture where one substance dissolves in another (like saltwater).
What is a solvent and a solute?
Solvent = the thing that does the dissolving; Solute = the thing that gets dissolved.
