Education in the home: Nobility

A

The children of the nobility learned variety of subjects. As Eliz was highly educated in these subjects, many noble families ensured that their daughters were, too.

Also learned skills expected of upper class women. Eg. Music, dancing, needlework, etc.

Boys taught skills too. Eg, horse riding, swimming, wrestling, other sports

A

Some grammar schls ran alternative curriculum for sons of merchants & craftsmen, focusing on academic subjects s.a Writing, Arithmetic. Focused on preparing boys for life they were expected to lead

Leisure: Music & Dancing

A

Elizabethans of all classes were passionate abt music. Many played instruments s.a lutes (similar to guitars). Expensive & found in upper class. Whilst bagpipes & fiddles (small violins) used by lower class

Leisure: Animal fights

A

Watching animals fight to death was considered entertainment. Many would gamble on these.
Baiting: a bear chained to post & dogs unleashed against it
Cock-fighting: cockerels & agressive birds made to fight

Sports played by wealthier Gentry & Nobility s.a:
- hunting on horseback
- fishing
- fencing

Education at school: petty schools

A

Often set up & run in a teacher’s home. Boys whose parents could afford schools begain their education here. Learn reading & writing of English, Arithemtic

After attending petty school, the bright boys sent to grammar school

Education at school: schools for girls

A

Girls of all classes did not go to schl. If they did, they would attend a Dame school - basic education run by local educated women.

A

For those able to go on to higher education, Eliz England had 2 universities: Oxford & Cambridge. Curriculum included Medicine, Music, Law, etc

A

Developed as a result of Protestantism. Many forms of plays attracted great attention. Led to construction of first purpose-built theatres. Popular w all classes
