One approach of emotional factor for controlling emotions
Positive self talk “You’re better than the defenders”
Another approach of emotional factor for anger
Rule of 3R’s when dealing with negative emotions such as anger/frustration
Recognize
Regroup
Refocus
What does Recognize mean in the 3R’s
To avoid reacting negatively
The physical (body reaction) symptoms when angry
- heart rate increases
- muscle tension
-body temperature increases- face gets red and starts to look angry
- heavier breathing
-red mist comes down
What does Regroup mean in the 3R’s
-Take 10 (s) seconds and deep breaths
E.g in football
- untie your shoe laces and retie
-Roll down your socks and roll back up
Forcing yourself to calm down making the red mist disappear
What does Refocus mean in the 3R’s
Outcome
Rather than retaliating, mind and emotions are positive again
Therefore in football I’m concentrating on marking during corner
Where am I putting the free kick
Why should we record/monitor our performance?
- Complete half way through training to see progress which increases your motivation
- To see if our approaches effective, adapting training programme (change your phrase were focus in training)
- Compare initial/ re-test results by motivation
- Identify other areas of improvement
Difficulties when retesting in the emotional factor
- Reliability- only performer knows how they are feeling (honesty)
- Feelings can change on the retest
- Conditions can have an affect, initial-quiet room retest- games, rush test to play netball
- Lack of understanding about what you’ve been asked leads to inaccurate initial data therefore can’t accurately compare on retest
Method of gathering data for emotional factor

Opposition performance will impact results
Other factors might influence results
No norms

Benefits of positive self talk
No equipment

Be specific to a particular weakness
Receive help from coach to think of words
Limitations of positive self talk
Concentrate too much on that aspect and forget other parts of performance
Easily forgotten during pressure situations
