What are the employment laws?

What’s a statement of particulars?
A document including information such as: job title, pay, when the worker will be paid, how many hours they must work
What is the equal pay act ?
Woman are paid the same as men when they do similar work
What is the employment rights act?
A business must give workers a statement of particulars
What is the race relation act?
Stopping people of a different race, nationality or ethnic origin from being treated differently to those of different origins
What is the minimum wage act?
Workers cannot be paid below an amount decided by the government.
What is the health and safety at work act?
The responsibility of the employer to protect workers from dangers in the workplace
What is the disability discrimination act?
Give equal opportunities to disabled people. Cannot be discriminated against during the recruitment process and that employers are expected to make reasonable changes to premises to allow access around them
What is a trade union?
Organisations that represent workers and give individuals a way of communicating with their employer even in large organisations
What is a tribunal?
A special court of law that deals with disputes between workers and employers
What are the types of industrial action?
Strike
Overtime ban
Work to rule
What is strike?
When workers withdraw their labour
What is overtime ban?
When workers only work hours stated in their contract
What is work to rule?
When workers will only do what is included in their contract
How will strike help?
- customers will be inconvenienced and will complain
- bad press will impact business reputation negatively
- lack of service reduces income
- customers may switch to competitor
What is meant by redundancy?
Employment is ended because firm no longer needs the work that was done by an employee
Why might a business be making staff redundant?
- business is closing down or moving location
- reorganisation
- need to cut costs
- new machinery introduced
What does ACAS stand for?
Advisory conciliation and arbitration service
What is ACAS?
An organisation which helps settle disputes between workers and employers
What are the 3 things that ACAS do?
Provide advice
Negotiate
Makes a decision
What is an organisational chart?
Diagrams that show the internal structure of the business
What are the benefits of organisational charts?
- shows who is responsible for which functions and tasks
- shows who and what each person is accountable to
- show whom a worker is responsible and who they must take orders from
- lines of communication
- Promotion route
- links between departments
What does authority mean?
The power that on erosion has to make decisions and to control what other workers do
What does accountability mean?
The responsibility that a person has for a job meaning that he/she will take the blame for what goes wrong as well as the credits for what goes well
