What is an appraisal?
A formal assessment of an employees performance
What’s included in an appraisal?
- review of current performance
- targets for upcoming year
- training/support identified
What is IIP (investors in people)?
Award scheme for business who provide opportunities for staff development p. These opportunities include training and development
When can a business be given an IIP status?
If its staff development programme meets certain criteria
What is motivation?
The will to work and do a good job

What is self actualisation ?
The need to feel that you have been able to use the talents that you have to achieve your potential
What are self-esteem needs?
The need to feel that other people value what you are and what you do
What are social needs ?
The need to be with other people, to have fun and to work in groups
What are safety needs?
The need to feel safe from physical danger that may put you at risk of injury or death
What are physiological (survival) needs ?
The basic needs that all humans must satisfy in order to stay alive
Example of self actualisation needs?
Promotion
Being given more responsibility
Successfully completing a task
Examples of self esteem needs?
Mutual respect between manager and employee

What is overtime ?
Staff are paid extra for working beyond normal hours
What is piece rate?
Piece rate: staff are paid for the number of items produced.
What is time rate?
Staff are paid for the number of hours worked.
What is commission?
Commission: staff are paid for the number of items they sell
What is a bonus ?
When the worker achieves a target level of production set by their manager
What is profit sharing?
Profit sharing: staff receive a part of any profits made by the business.
What is a salary?
Salary: staff are paid monthly no matter how many hours they work.
