What is training?
The process of increasing the knowledge and skills of the workforce to enable them to perform their jobs effectively.
Why is training good for the worker?
- gained confidence from the training
- gain qualifications
- more job satisfaction
- improvement on skills
Why is training good for the business?
- employees hodge been seen as getting high qualifications and at looks good on the business
- staff know what they’re talking about so sales increase and less things are broken so costs are reduced
Less likely to get sued
Types of skills included in training
- management skills
- personal skills
- technical skills
- knowledge of new products
- personal development
- group working
What are management skills?
When an employee is promoted or seeking promotion and need to learn the skills of that new job
What are personal skills?
When an individual struggles on personal skills that are required in the work that they have to do e.g communicating
What are technical skills?
When an employee needs to learn new skills to use a machine or upgrade their existing skills to use the machine
What is knowledge of new products?
When workers need to be told about new products so they provide information that the customer wants
What is personal development?
The employee developing in things that may not be accosiated with work. This can raise the workers self esteem, motivation and ambitions
What is group working?
When workers need training about how to work well with others and how to benefit each other
What are the 3 types of training?
- induction training
- on the job training
- off the job training
What is induction training?
Introducing an employee to a business and its procedures
Examples of induction training?
- security codes
- toilets
- lunch arrangements
- payroll number
- health and safety training
- where things are located
What is on the job training?
Receiving training whilst remaining at the workplace. Normally through an experienced worker through demonstration/ shadowing. Coaching may also occur
Advantages of on the job training?
- cheaper ( no travel or accommodation costs)
- given individual training
- worker still produces whilst training
- trained in the ways of the firm
Disadvantages of on the job training?
- may not produce as much
- trainer may need to leave his/her work to help trainee
- quality won’t be as good if trainee does it- wasted resources and/or poor reputation for quality
What is off the job training?
Employees are taken away from the work place to be trained. ( normally a different location but could be another part of the workplace)
Advantages of off the job training?
- experts may provide training
- trainee can use specially designed equipment
- workers enjoy change of environment
Disadvantages of off the job training?
- expensive due to travel and accommodation costs
