Enculturation
Process by which people learn the necessary and appropriate skills and norms in the context of their culture
Direct tuition
Members of society explicitly teach certain beliefs, values, or expected norms of behavior
Observational learning
Individuals learn by observing and imitating behavior of models, especially if behavior is reinforced with models
Participatory learning
Engaging in activities which are meant to instill certain values, beliefs, and expectations
Acculturation
Process of psychological and cultural change as a result of contact and interactions between cultures
Acculturative stress
Psychological strain individuals experience when adapting to a new culture
Assimilation
When individuals are open to change and are unconcerned about loss to heir culture, loses sense of belonging to heritage culture
Integration
When individuals want to hold on to traditional values but desire interactions with other cultures
Separation
When individuals value original culture and actively avoids contact with their new culture
Marginalisation
When individuals have little interest in maintaining original culture and little interest in relations with other cultures
Acculturation gaps
When generations within a family adopt different strategies, leading to conflict
Reactive identification
Tendency to value identity more intensely when facing discrimination
