What does it mean when someone is in a hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state?
chronic hyperglycemia leads to excessive osmotic diuresis and dehydration
leads to increased serum osmolality and decreased blood volume and hyperglycemia
What is the concept of osmotic diuresis?
which the excretion of water in the urine is increased due to the presence of certain substances (osmoles) in the renal tubules
What are the effects of DDAVP?
DDAVP produces an ADH-like agent that concentrates the urine and releases von Willebrand factor from endothelial cells, helping to aggregate platelets.
What can result from the concomittant use of fibrates (like gemfibrozil) and statins?
Fibrates used along with statins increase the risk for myopathy, which may lead to rhabdomyolysis and myoglobinuria.
Which DM drugs have a side effect of weight gain?
thiazolidinediones (glits)
