Endocrine Flashcards

Crotisol to cortisone converting enzyme
11 beta hydroxy steroid dehydrogenase type 2
Cortisol has both glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid actions. Cortisone is inactivated form with only gc action
Pseudocushings seen in
Obese
Depression
Alcoholics
Due to chronic stress
Cushings ds vs cushings syndrome
Cushings syndrome has all the symptoms like moon facies, purple striae, buffalo hump, central obesity, proximal muscle weakness, hypertension, easy bruising
Cushing disease is pituitary adenoma
Infection with eosinopenia is____
Non-infection with eosinopenia is__
1.typhoid
2.cushings syndrome
Actions of cortisol in cushings
1.protein - main
Protein catabolism… but actually mainly reduced protein anabolism in extrahepatic tissue. Aminoa cids uptake is reduced in extrahepatic tissues so proximal myopathy and increased in liver. So aa in blood increases, ie, alanine also increase in blood which is a main substrate for gluconeogenesis… taken up by liver.. thus increasing blood sugar level.
2.fat-mainly fat distribution and minimal lipolysis(which also increase blood sugar by gluconeogenesis
3.carohydrate - adrenal diabetes d/t lipolysis and alanine gluconeogenesis
4.mineralocorticoid action - triad : htn, alkalosis, hypokalemia
5.sex steroid action- acne, hirsuitism, amenorrhea/oligomenorrhea
6.cns - depression, steroid induced psychosis(rare)
