Endocrine Drugs Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the function of the endocrine system?
Endocrine system continuously monitors the amount of hormones in the blood. Hormones deliver their messages by locking into the cells they target so they can relay the message.
What are hormones?
Hormones are chemical substance produced in the body that controls and regulates the activity of certain cells or organs.
What are endocrine drugs used for?
Drug therapy for the endocrine system is implemented to replace a hormone deficiency or to prevent or reduce the formation or effects of excess hormone.
What is the indication of somatostatin agonists?
Treatment of intestinal, biliary and pancreatic fistulae. Symptomatic treatment of excessive secretion from endocrine tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. Treatment of postoperative complications and prophylaxis following pancreatic surgery. Coadjuvant treatment in diabetic ketoacidosis.
Oxytocin is used to:
Help start or continue labor and to control bleeding after delivery. It is also sometimes used to help milk secretion in breast-feeding.
What is glucocorticoid?
A glucocorticoid is any one of a group of steroid hormones, such as cortisone, that are produced by the adrenal glands in the kidney and which control carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolism, and have anti-inflammatory activity.
What are the therapeutic uses of thyroid hormone?
It is used as a treatment for all forms of hypothyroidism in all ages. It is also used intravenously for the emergency treatment of myxedema coma.
Insulin is used to:
Treat a number of diseases including diabetes and its acute complications such as diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic states. It is also used along with glucose to treat high blood potassium levels.
What are sulphonylurea drugs?
These are oral medicines for type 2 diabetes. Sulphonylureas work by stimulating the body’s natural insulin release and helping insulin work more effectively in the body. Sulphonylureas help to reduce blood glucose levels, improve diabetes control and protect against diabetes complications.
What is the purpose of injecting glucagon?
Glucagon injection is an emergency medicine used to treat severe hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) in diabetes patients treated with insulin who have passed out or cannot take some form of sugar by mouth.
