Endocrine System Flashcards
What is the function of the hypothalamus
The hypothalamus is located in the brain and plays a role in controlling the hormones
What is the function the pituitary gland
The pituitary gland releases hormones to regulate bodily functions like growth, reproduction, and metabolism.
What is the function of the thyroid gland
Its located in the neck and its main function is to produce hormones(like thyroxxine) that regulate your body’s metabolism

Adrenal cortex and adrenal medulla
The adrenal cortex helps regulate things like metabolism and salt balance,
while the adrenal medulla is involved in the fight-or-flight response. (SNS)
What is the function of the ovaries
They produce eggs and hormones like estrogen and progesterone. They’re located in the lower abdomen
What is the function of the testes
The testes are responsible for producing sperm and testosterone.
What is the endocrine system
The endocrine system is a system that has glands that produce hormones. These hormones travel through your bloodstream to regulate things like growth, metabolism, and reproduction
Name the disorders of the endocrine system
Hypothyroidism
Diabetes mellitus
What is diabetes mellitus
Diabetes mellitus is a condition happens when the pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin as as a result the body has trouble regulating blood sugar levels
What is hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone like thyroxine . This can slow down your body’s metabolism and lead to symptoms like fatigue, weight gain
what causes diabetes mellitus
caused by either low insulin being produced or body isn’t responding to it
what are the effects of diabetes mellitus
thirst
frequent urination
what are the treatments of diabetes mellitus
For type 1 =injectable insulin
for type 2= better diet
what causes hypothyroidism
low amount of thyroxine being produced in thyroid gland
what are the side effects of hypothyroidism
Weight gain
fatigue
