What is the definition of the endocrine system?
The glands and organs that make hormones and release them directly into the blood.
What are hormones?
Chemical substances in the body produced by endocrine glands targeting specific organs or cells (called target organs or target cells).
What is testosterone?
A male hormone associated with acne, facial hair growth, and mood changes.
What is estrogen?
A female hormone involved in milk production and the functioning of the ovary and uterus.
What is the pituitary gland known as?
The master gland that releases hormones to maintain homeostasis when told by the hypothalamus.
What is the role of the hypothalamus?
Constantly checks the internal environment and regulates homeostasis by coordinating with the nervous system.
Where are endocrine glands located?
In the ovary (female), kidney, hypothalamus, pituitary gland, pineal gland, parathyroid gland, testis (male), thyroid gland, thymus, and pancreas.
What mnemonic can help remember the locations of endocrine glands?
Only kids have perfect peas plowing trees, tanks & tomatoes.
How are sugars regulated in the body?
Sugars are regulated by insulin, which removes sugar from the blood, and glucagon, which secretes stored sugar into the bloodstream. Both are hormones released by the pancreas.
