Microbes And Diseases Flashcards
(8 cards)
What are microbes?
Very small living things that are sometimes called micro organisms. They can’t be seen with the naked eye and include bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
What are bacteria?
Single cell organisms with no nucleus. They can be rod, spherical, or comma shaped, measuring 1/1000mm. They reproduce very quickly; some cause disease, but most are helpful.
What are viruses?
Simple organisms that don’t display all the characteristics of living things. They are usually geometric shapes, measuring 1/1000000. They can only grow and reproduce within living things and are made of a protein coated in genetic material.
What are fungi?
The most complex structures of all microbes, with many different shapes. Some can be seen with the naked eye, and they feed off other living things.
What are some uses of bacteria?
Bacteria growth can be used to turn milk into yoghurt.
What are some uses of fungi?
Fungi can be used to make meat substitutes, and yeast makes bread.
How are diseases transmitted?
Transmission can occur through air, water, animals, and contact.
How can diseases enter the body?
They can enter through the mouth, nose, eyes, ears, skin, cuts, and genitalia.
