Nervous System Flashcards
(12 cards)
How fast do nerve cells send signals?
100 meters per second
What does the nervous system include?
The nervous system includes the brain, spinal cord, and a complex network of nerves that help your body sense things.
What are sense organs?
The sense organs are receptors that detect changes in the environment (stimuli) and send messages to the brain.
What types of receptors are there?
There are photoreceptors (light), thermoreceptors (temperature), mechanoreceptors (touch), and chemoreceptors (chemicals).
What does the autonomic nervous system control?
The autonomic nervous system controls aspects of the body that we do not consciously manage.
What are the two parts of the autonomic nervous system?
The two parts are the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
What is the state of the body in the parasympathetic nervous system?
The parasympathetic nervous system is when your body is in homeostasis and under no pressure.
What is the state of the body in the sympathetic nervous system?
The sympathetic nervous system is when your body is in fight or flight mode.
What regulates responses to stimuli?
All responses to stimuli are regulated by feedback loops.
What is a negative feedback loop?
A negative feedback loop involves homeostasis-change (bad)-another change(reset)-homeostasis.
What is a positive feedback loop?
A positive feedback loop involves change leading to more change, helping the original change.
What is the sequence of a feedback loop?
Stimulus (detects change) – Receptor (processes the change) – Effector (responds to stimulus) – Response (changed by effector) – Feedback (change detected).
