Endothermic and Exothermic Reactions Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is an exothermic reaction?
Energy is released.
Happens when reactants have more energy than products.
Examples: 🎆 Fireworks, 🔥 Bunsen burner.
What is an endothermic reaction?
Energy is absorbed.
Happens when reactants have less energy than products.
Example: ❄️ Cold packs.
What is combustion?
A chemical reaction where oxygen burns a substance.
Produces light and heat (energy).
Example:
(Hexane burning in oxygen forms carbon dioxide and water.)
What is corrosion?
Corrosion is the process by which metals combine with oxygen to produce metal oxides.
Example: Iron + Oxygen + Water = Hydrated iron (III) oxide (rust)
What is a decomposition reaction?
A decomposition reaction occurs when a single reactant breaks apart to form multiple products.
Example:
Carbonic acid decomposes into water and carbon dioxide
What is thermal decomposition?
Thermal decomposition is a type of decomposition reaction where a reactant breaks down into simpler products when heated.
Example:
Sodium azide decomposes when heated to produce sodium and nitrogen gas
What is a Combination Reaction?
When two reactions combine to form a single reaction
What is a Precipitation Reaction?
A reaction where 2 soluble reactants form an insoluble product ( precipitate)
