Acids and Bases Flashcards
(8 cards)
What are acids?
Acids are substances which ionize (form ions) in water to produce hydrogen ions.
The more of these ions produced, the more acidic the solution.
What are bases?
Substances which produce OH- ions in water.
They have a soapy feel and are bitter in taste.
What are Alkali or alkaline Solution?
It is a base that can dissolve in water.
What is a Neutralisation Reaction?
When an acid reacts with a base to form a salt plus water
What is an acid + metal reaction?
Acids react with reactive metals to produce a salt and hydrogen gas.
What is an acid + carbonate reaction?
When an acid reacts with a metal carbonate to produce a salt + water + carbon dioxide
What is the pH scale?
It measures the concentration of H+ ions in solutions.
Neutral = 7
basic (alkali) > 7
Acidic < 7
What is Indicator?
Indicators are substances that change colour at different pH levels, helping us quickly estimate a solution’s pH.
