Yr 9 Chemistry RE-CAP Flashcards
(10 cards)
Atomic Structure
The atom is made of three subatomic particles:
- Protons (+), found in nucleus, heavy.
- Neutrons (no charge), found in nucleus, heavy.
- Electrons (-), they orbit the nucleus, and are light.
What determines the type of Atom?
The number of protons
What determines the mass of an atom
The number of protons and neutrons
What determines the net charge of an atom?
The ration of protons to electrons
What determines the stability of an atom?
The ratio of neutrons to protons
Isotopes
Isotopes are atoms of the same element (same no. of protons) that have a different number of neutrons.
Cation
A positive Ion
Anion
A negative ion
Ion
An ion is an atom or molecule that has gained or lost electrons, giving it a positive or negative charge.
