Energy and Waves Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is the formula for kinetic energy?
KE = 1/2 x mass x velocity^2
What is the formula for potential energy?
PE = mass x gravity x height (PE = mgh)
What is the Law of Conservation of Energy?
Energy cannot be created nor destroyed, only transferred or transformed.
What are the three methods of heat transfer?
Conduction, convection, and radiation.
What is a conductor?
A material that transfers heat or electricity well.
What is an insulator?
A material that resists the flow of heat or electricity.
What are transverse waves?
Waves in which particles move perpendicular to the direction of the wave.
What are longitudinal waves?
Waves in which particles move parallel to the direction of the wave.
What type of wave is light?
Electromagnetic and transverse.
What type of wave is sound?
Mechanical and longitudinal.
What is amplitude?
The height of a wave from the rest position, indicating energy.
What is frequency?
The number of wave cycles per second (measured in Hertz).
What is wavelength?
The distance from one crest/trough to the next.
What causes the Doppler effect?
The motion of a wave source changing the observed frequency.
What is refraction?
The bending of waves as they enter a new medium.
