Energy Consumption Comparison Flashcards
(5 cards)
Physical Availability
UK = Domestic coal, North Sea oil and gas
Norway = Mountainous so use HEP, able to export fossil fuels
Cost
UK = North Sea oil expensive to extract + stock declining so have to import more and more
Norway = HEP costs low once construction done, however expensive to transfer from remote to urban areas
Technology
150 years worth of coal in UK, yet coal mines closed as too expensive
Deepwater drilling allows UK and Norway to extract NS oil
Political Considerations
Privatisation of UK energy means overseas companies decide where we import from
Fracking has become of public concern
Norway has interventionist approach so no foreign companies own its fossil fuel supplies
Environment Priorities
UK and Norway committed to 40% FF reduction by 2030
However, UK abandoned its ‘green deal’ so continues to use lots of fossil fuels
