ENERGY RESOURCES Flashcards
(21 cards)
often referred to as clean energy, comes from natural sources or processes that are constantly replenished.
Renewable Energy
Is sourced from the sun and is free and inexhaustible. The main source of energy for every living matter in planet.
Solar Energy
a renewable energy source that comes from heat stored in the Earth’s core and rocks. The word geothermal comes from the Greek words geo (earth) and therme (heat)
Geothermal Energy
TYPES OF GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
A. Liquid Dominated Geothermal Plants
B. Vapor Dominated Geothermal Plants
C. Binary Cycle Plants
HOW GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
WORKS
- Hot water is pumped from deep underground
through a well under high pressure. - When the water reaches the surface, the pressure is
dropped, which causes the water to turn into steam. - The steam spins a turbine, which is connected to a
generator that produces electricity. - The steam cools off in a cooling tower and
condenses back to water. - The cooled water is pumped back into the Earth to
begin the process again
is a renewable energy source that uses the kinetic energy of moving water to generate electricity. It’s one of the oldest and largest sources of renewable energy.
Hydroelectric Energy or Hydropower
that creates a large waterfall and stores enough water to supply the plant at all times
Dam
that channels water from its natural environment to supply the dam reservoir.
Penstock
that houses the turbines driven by the waterfall and the generator driven by the turbines.
Powerhouse
TYPES OF HYDRO POWER PLANT
Run of river plants
Off stream plants
Pumped Storage Plants
Wind Energy
Biomass Energy
Tidal Power
run of river plants produces energy using the water flow.
Run of river plants
are modular, meaning that energy can be produced on demand with dams used to create reservoirs that can be released as required.
Off stream plants
when demand is required water is released from the higher reservoir to lower reservoir.
Pumped storage plants
collectively describe the process by which the moving air or wind is used to generate mechanical power or electricity.
Wind Energy
is energy generated or produced by living or once-living organisms.
Biomass Energy
is the energy obtained from the rise and fall of tides.
Tidal Energy
TYPES OF HARNESSING TIDAL POWER
Tidal Barrage and Tidal Stream Power
power systems take advantage of ocean currents to drive turbines.
Tidal Barrage
take advantage of ocean currents to drive turbines, particularly in areas around islands or coasts where these currents are fast.
Tidal Stream Power
a type of power station that generates electricity using heat from nuclear reactions.
