Energy System Interplay Flashcards

Q

(Continuous event)

Write a response for a Usain Bolt’s 200m sprint (19.19 seconds).

A

At the start of the 200-metre race, all energy systems contribute to energy production, however their contributions differ.

As bolt explodes out of the starting blocks, the ATP-CP system is the dominant energy system due to the maximal intensity, and remains this way until around the 6-10 second mark where CP depletion occurs.

At this stage, anaerobic glycolysis becomes the dominant energy system due to there still being a high demand for energy. This system remains dominant until the end of the race.

The aerobic system’s contribution is increasing throughout the event, but never to a point where it is the dominant energy supplier.

The predominant system throughout the 200m event is the ATP-CP system due to the short duration of 19.19 seconds.

Q

(Intermittent event)

Write a response to the energy system interplay during the last 3 minutes of Kobe’s final game.

A

All three energy systems would contribute to Kobe’s energy requirements during the final 3 minutes of the match.

The aerobic system would be responsible for providing energy for all lower intensity efforts throughout this time such as the four free-throws, walking and jogging down the court. The aerobic system would also have been dominant during periods where Kobe was off the court such as in timeouts and when he got substituted from the match.

The ATP-PC system would be dominant when Kobe has available stores of PC after restoring from adequate periods of rest during the match and this would allow him to perform high intensity efforts for a short period of time such as lay-ups and pull-up jump shots.

If these high intensity movements and actions didn’t follow with adequate rest, then the anaerobic glycolysis system would be the dominant system to provide energy due to the ATP-PC system being fatigued.

The aerobic system would be the predominant system for the final minutes of the match.
