What is a gross motor skill?
Movements involving the use of large muscle groups that result in a coordinated action.
(Example; kicking a ball).
What is a fine motor skill?
Delicate, precise movements that engage the use of small muscle groups.
(Example; shooting in archery).
What is a discrete motor skill?
Movements of brief duration that are easily defined by a distinct beginning and end.
(Example; shooting a foul shot in basketball).
What is a serial motor skill?
Series or group of discrete skills strung together to create a more complicated skilled action.
(Example; a gymnasts floor routine).
What is a continuous motor skill?
Movements with no distinct beginning or ending.
Example; running in a marathon
What is a closed motor skill?
Movements that are performed in a predictable, self-paced environments.
(Example; the vault in gymnastics).
What is an open motor skill?
Motor skills that are performed in an environment that is constantly changing and externally paced.
(Example; kicking for goal in AFL, especially in an outdoor stadium).
What is a fundamental motor skill and what are the specific types?
Movement patterns that involve different body parts. They are the foundational movements to more sports-specific skills.
Stability skills; balance and control of the body.
Locomotive skills; walking, running.
Manipulative skills; throwing, catching, striking, kicking.
