Who is the Engineering Officer?
CDR OLANIRAN
Who is the Damage Control Officer?
CDR OLANIRAN
Who is the Damage Control Assistant?
CDR TYNDALL
Who is the Main Propulsion Assistant?
LT BULLS
Who is the Auxiliaries Officer?
LT CEESAY
Who is the Electrical Officer?
LT ZHAO
What are the two engineering logs that are legal documents?
ENGINEERING LOG AND ENGINEERING BELL BOOK
How long must the ship retain the two legal documents?
3 YEARS
What is the difference between an EOOW and EDO?
EOOW is in charge of engineering evolutions underway; EDO takes charge in port.
What are the Engineering Night Orders?
All orders Cheng expects to be carried out from 2200 – 0600 hrs.
What is the ‘Quiet Bill’?
Generated by the Cheng whose purpose is configuring machinery to minimize the ship’s noise emissions.
What three subsystems comprise EOSS (Engineering Operational Sequencing Systems)?
- EOP (Engineering Operational Procedures)
- EOCC (Engineering Operational Casualty Control)
- EOSS Users Guide
What are the four phases of the Basic Steam Cycle?
Generation, Expansion, Condensate, and Feed
Where does each phase of the Basic Steam Cycle begin and end?
PHASE:
GENERATION: Begins in the boiler, ends at the inlet to the HP/LP turbine.
EXPANSION: Begins at HP/LP turbine, ends at hotwell.
CONDENSATE: Begins at hotwell, ends at top half of DFT.
FEED: Begins at bottom of DFT, ends at boiler tubes.
What component acts as the division of the condensate and feed phase?
The DFT
What is the function of the DFT?
Dearate, preheat, and store feedwater.
What type of boilers do we have on Essex?
Combustion Engineering V2M ‘D’ type.
What two types of steam are generated in the boiler?
700 PSI main and 600 PSI auxiliary.
What type of fuel is used in the boiler?
NATO F76 (formerly known as diesel fuel marine).
Who maintains the boiler water chemistry and oil and fuel program for engineering?
Oil King
What are the users of main steam?
HP and LP turbines and SSTGs.
What provides cooling to the main condenser to condense the exhausted steam of turbines?
Seawater
How do we get the seawater through the main condenser?
Above –12 knots – scoop injection; below 12 knots and astern – main seawater circ pump.
Why is air removal so vital to the main engine?
Because the main condenser operates under a vacuum (approx 29”).
