Q

Description of “And when the war is done and the youth stone dead, i’d toddle safely home and die - in bed”

A

If he was a Major, Siegfried Sassoon would toddle safely home. The word ‘toddle’ shows that the poet thought of the Majors as fat. And the word ‘ Safely’ he is showing how they were more well off than the soldiers. By mentioning that he would die in bed, he is showing that the majors would have a peaceful death unharmed by war. The bed symbolised comfort and laziness

Q

Description of “Yes, we lost heavily in this last scrap”

A

In this line, the poet used the word ‘ scrap ‘ when he is talking about a war. A scrap would be a fight but wouldn’t be a serious fight. This shows that the Majors in WWI did not have the horrifying experience of the soldiers.

Look over Annotations (Dulce et Decorum Est and flip)

A

The soldiers are ‘bent double’ - opposite to the posters view of the men with straight backs
The simile ‘like old beggars under sacks’ shows us how poor they are and how old and tired - they are weak, impoverished.
‘Knock-Kneed’ - they’re not scared; they’re exhausted
‘ coughing like hags’- sickly ill old, like old women who smoke heavily or witches- the image is not one we think of when we imagine soldiers
‘Cursed through sludge’ - not gentleman-like behaviour:the sludge would make it had work; extremely difficult.
‘Haunting flares’ - ghostly, nightmarish
‘Distant rest’- eternal rest
‘Blood Shod’ - with no boots the men would be in absolute agony
‘All went lame’ - can’t walk
‘Blind’ - loss of sight
‘Deaf’ - cant hear.
loss of all of their main senses why
The ironic thing is the gentle way these gas shells drop. They cause utter devastation and can kill within seconds. ‘Hoots’ make them sound gentle like owls or smaller birds.
This stanza is showing the men to be exhausted the walking dead, barely alive and fit for nothing, contradicting the government’s view
‘Gas!Gas! Quick Boys!’ - dialogue, dramatic departure from the last stanza
‘Flound’ring around like a man in fire or lime’ - this soldier is in hell, being burned
The word drowning is important here. The green glass makes the outside look like the sea. The man is drowning - drowning in his own blood
‘In all my dreams’- He cant stop thinking about him
‘ If… you too’ - a direct challenge to those who think they are brave
‘Like a devil’s sick of sin’ - the image may be so grotesque that even the devil feels sick / living hell
‘If you could hear’ - moving onto the aural section. The challenge is for you to have no feelings when you hear the blood in ‘froth-corrupted lungs
‘Vile incureable sores on innocent tounges’ the ‘dulce et’ saying comes from innocent mouths who havent seen the realities of was
‘Noble jest’ seemingly an oxymoron this isnt noble nor a jest
It ends with a very powerful statement. It’s a lie. As i said i always thought that lie and mori rhymed it had more of an impact on me
Iambic pentameter

Analysis of the Opening - Of Mices of Men

A

Setting
Empty but Full of Nature, with things such as brush, trees and a stream

Colours
There are many Summer themed colours such as green nature, yellow sand and white recumbent limbs and branches that arch over the pool

Imagery
The imagery in the story is mostly focused around the naturistic values with many images of the rivers, the animals such as Rabbits and lizards are mentioned to allow the reader to see these naturistic values of this area

Characters
My first impression of is Lennie is presented as animalistic features but is extremely childlike, like as of his fascination with animals and also is simple speech

My first impression of is Lennie is presented as this short man with temper issues with him snapping at anything that he feels annoys him but is extremely apologetic if does start like this

Q

Explain the theme of Dulce et decorum est. (essay)

A

The main theme that i can draw from wilfred owens poem ‘Dulce et Decorum est’ is the lie with deceit of the younger generation into believing that dying for your country is sweet and proper but if these ‘…innocent tounges’ knew the actual truth they ‘would not say with such high zest to children ardent for some desparate glory the old lie, “Dulce et Decorum est. pro patria mori”’ this show us, the reader that every thing the people say to us about fighting for your country is so honourable but the truth is that you feel scared half the time and feel like a pawn to the old lie as they see all these people ‘Guttering, choking, drowning’ we also see that the people who are subjected to see this vile end see it in all their dreams before their ‘helpless sight’.

Q

Explain the theme of base details. (
essay)

A

The main theme that is displayed with in the poem is anger displayed by Siegfred Sassoon due to the unfair treatment of the soldiers within the war and the majors having a great life, one without the fear of death

Unfairness of the war due to the majors living a lavish lifestyle. This was due to most of the majors in those times being unfit for war with their ‘puffy petulant faces” insinuating these were unfit men who were not good for the job and `them being in the ‘best hotel’ furthers this fact due to no man who is not either rich or influential is going to be getting a room or even a meal in that hotel.

Second of all the majors pretended to be more important than they were within the war. This is as of during the majors reading the role of honour saying recycled phrases such as ‘poor young chap’ or ‘ i used to know his father well’ they would say ‘ we’ve lost heavily in this last scrap’ emphasis on we’ve in the sentance due to them feeling like they did as much or even more work then them in the war also they refer to these battles as scraps like a child would have in a playground even though they are extremely different with one being temporary while the other having lasting affects which i feel really shows the fillipant nature of these majors

Last of all i feel like the treatment of the soldiers during the war may have been the final stray for sassoon, this is due to the desciption of the men being ‘speed glum heros’ referencing the fear they may have been feeling which we the reader may barely understand the sheer scale of fear that these men may be feeling and may regard them as heros as of them fighting for their country but the soldiers may have also been feeling jealousy in these moments aswell as while they are fighting they may have been feeling jealousy or anget due to these majors drinking all the time as the title suggest due to scarlett being the colour most people may be after drinking until the point of drunkeness. This behaviour from the Majors in my opinion is discusting as people may be dying but they still have time to drink and maybe even party while these young men die fighting for their country.

All of this just show to me that the feelings of Sassoon aren’t just valid but justified due to this behaviour exhibited by the Majors during the war with them acting as if they were better than everyone else just because they were rich.

Q

PQE of the importance of curleys wife

A

I feel that the importance of Curley’s wife within the story is that to show her as this ‘tart’ on the outside, with her being treated as if she was less than human and unimportant and just a piece of property that was owned by Curley but on the inside her story was just her trying to seek a tiny bit of attention from Curley or the other men by conversation as of her loneliness, she was also promised all these great things like ‘He says I could go with that show’ or she ‘Coulda been in the movies’ but just as tragic as the start of her life was she was then soon killed which then set off the final sequence of this story which ended the dream of the farm that could’ve been

Q

My Personal Opinion on the Ending

A

My personal opinion on the ending of this story is that it was extremely sad to see happen as you can see the reluctance of George when pulling the trigger and we also see Lennie’s fears with disappointing George, and all of this draws from the final chapter. This starts with Lennie seeing his in his Aunt Clara in his imagination saying that ‘You never give a thought to George’ showing his true fears within this chapter, letting down George, we also see also in Lennie’s imagination a massive rabbit telling him that ‘You ain’t worth a greased jack-pin to ram you into hell’ and just shows his struggles within this one line, with him thinking that he is worth nothing, we also see George in this chapter with him knowing he has to kill Lennie, but is reluctant to do so and we see this when he says ‘Take off your hat, Lennie, the air feels fine’ shakily showing he knows what he needs to do but is just so nervous to do so. Once George takes Carlson’s luger from Lennie’s pocket he lined it up with his neck but then chickened out at the last minute, and then after making it so Lennie was happy and calm before died and then fired the shot. This led to George throwing away the luger in shame of what he had done, these few pages really emphasised the real horrors and tribulations these characters faced and ended just as fast with the killing of Lennie, the saddest thing of all.
