Noun
Person, place, thing, or idea
Adjective
Describes a noun (Ex. She has a small dog).
Coordinating Adjectives (Comma)
Can be reversed and an “and” can be added. (I like the clean, breezy taste of that toothpaste.”)
Cumulative Adjectives (No Comma)
Cannot be reversed and an “and” cannot be added. (“The waiter brought a tall baby chair.”)
Verb
Describes an action (Ex. Sarah walked to the store).
Conjunctions (Connect words or clauses)
For, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
Subordinating Conjunctions (ISAWAWABUB)
A word that connects a dependent clause to an independent clause. (Ex. He was annoyed because the train had stopped).
Simple Sentence
Independent Clause (I kicked the ball.)
Compound Sentence
2 or More Independent Clauses (I kicked the ball, and it hit Tom.)
Complex Sentence
1 Independent Clause and 1 Dependent Clauses (Tom cried because the ball hit him.)
Compound-Complex Sentence
2 or More Independent Clauses and 1 or More Dependent Clauses (Tom cried because the ball hit him, and I apologized immediately.)
Preposition
A linking word (Ex. They will meet in the lunchroom).
Adverb
Describes a verb (Ex. He sings loudly.)
