what is the English Reformation?
A
A movement in the 16th century where England broke away from the authority of the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church.

A
Given the title ‘Defender of Faith’ by Pope in 1521
Wrote a book defending the Catholic faith against the 95 Theses, by Martin Luther

why did Henry VIII want to divorce Katherine?
A
- wanted a son to continue the Tudor line, but only had a daughter, Mary with Katherine by 1516
thought God was punishing him for marrying his brother’s widow, so wanted to end the marriage

what was the process of his annulment?
A
- 1527 fell in love with Anne Boleyn, she didn’t want an affair and he wanted to marry her
- 1527 sent his archbishop Wolsey to the Pope to ask for annulment

what was the outcome of the annulment?
A
- the Pope refused as marriage was legal
- held prisoner by Katherine’s nephew, he didn’t want Henry to humiliate Katherine
- decided to leave the Catholic Church as a way to leave Katherine

what were the other reasons for Henry wanting to leave the Catholic?
A
- wanted to leave Katherine, to have a son with Anne
- The church takes money from England in taxes for the Pope & Henry wanted that
- more people were falling towards the Protestant faith and it was spreading everywhere, like in Germany, they began throwing Catholic & reforming their own

why did Henry VIII break away from the Pope and establish the Church of England?
A
- Henry didn’t want to wait for the Pope & annulled his own marriage with Katherine
- Henry was sleeping with Anne, and she got pregnant in 1533, had to marry Anne quickly, or else the child wouldn’t inherit thrown after birth
- Admist the Catholic corruption and Protestants complaints, Henry didn’t agree but was determined for male heir
- Henry made himself Supreme head in 1533, of the new Church of England, which was Protestant using the parliament

what did Henry do after becoming Supreme Leader and marrying Anne?
A
- bullied anyone who opposed his break from the Catholic Church
- executed previous trusted men
- got rid of his old archbishop Wolsey and got a new Protestant archbishop, Cranmar
- closed all monasteries & convents in England and took the money and land
