what was the great schism & what did it lead to?
The split/division of the Catholic Church & Orthodox after 1054.
West = Catholic
East = Orthodox
The Great Schism set the stage for the Protestant Reformation
what were some reasons for the split?
- Icons
- Filioque controversy
- Language barrier
- Power struggle
- Distance
- Economic & political turmoil
how was the Church before the split?
Church in the 4th century had 5 patriarchs/heads
they governed a certain area of ‘patriarchate’
West had 1
East had 4 (Antioch, Jerusalem, Alexandria & Bryzatium)
was the West educated or uneducated & why
West teachings were in Latin
- focused on Latin only
- less educated
Literacy declined among the general population as local languages became dominant, limiting access to education, causing the clergy in the West to become the primary educators.

East/Orthodox Church
was the East educated or uneducated & why?
East teachings were in Greek
- focused on different areas
- more educated
East had general education & more universities, creating a more literate population, leading to more Theologians.
which side worshipped icons and which side didn’t and why?
Religious practices were used in worship by the West, as they believed it aided them with worship.
- brought you closer to God
East disagreed as it was wrong to worship a man-made object, and you should only worship God.
- went against the second commandment
what was the filioque?
“Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit
filioque = and Son in Latin
what was the filioque controversy?
The ‘and Son’ part was added to the Nicene creed
Catholic’s - Holy Spirit proceeded from both Father and Son
Orthodox - Holy Spirit proceeded from Father only
Orthodox were confused and angered as Catholics added the filioque to Nicene without consulting them, raised questions like..
1. who did they worship
2. who had the authority to change the doctrine
what was the Nicene creed before and after?
Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father..
And Son… was later added
which side has more power & why?
Pope claimed he had power over anything..
- angered Patriarch as West had the authority of its own Church, East was ruled by Emperor’s
this was the last straw..
how did the West & East split?
The power struggle was the last straw..
Pope Leo IX and Patriarch Michael I excommunicated each other
what does exocomuncia does exocommunicate mean?
To excommunicate someone is to banish them from their church officially.
what did the Catholic and Orthodox Church have in common?
- Faith in Jesus and the Bible
- Leaders are the Priest and Bishop
- Both want to convert people to Christianity
what are the characteristics of the Catholic Church?
The leader called the Pope, had authority over Bishop
- Pope had authority over all kings and Emperors
- Latin is used
- Divorce is not allowed with annulment
what are the characteristics of the Orthodox Church?
- Leader called Patriarch and the Bishop
- The Emperor had authority over the officials of the Church
- Priest may be married
- Local languages used
- Divorce is allowed without annulment
which side came to dominate the other?
Eastern Orthodox Church came to dominate Eastern Europe
- had more patriarch
- deeply entwined with the cultures and identities of Eastern European peoples
