Enzymes Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is an Enzyme
A type of protein (amino acids) you produce and use to speed up some reaction like digestion
What is a catalyst
Substance (enzymes) that allows a chemical reaction to occur that would not occur under those conditions without the catalyst
Lactase
breaks down lactose into galactose and glucose, this occurs in the small intestine
Maltase
breaks down maltose into glucose. This occurs in the small intestine
Lipase
breaks down lipids into glycerol and fatty acids. This occurs in the pancreas/small intestine
Pepsin
breaks down proteins into amino acids and short peptide chains. This occurs in the stomach
Trypsin
breaks down proteins into peptides. This occurs in the Pancreas/ small intestine
Catalase
breaks down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen.
Peptidase
breaks down peptides into amino acids. This occurs in the small intestine
Salivary amylase
breaks down starch into maltose. This occurs in the Mouth.
Pancreatic Amylase
breaks down starch into maltose. This is created by both the pancreas but ultimately is in the small intestine
