Mechanical Digestion Flashcards
(8 cards)
Mechanical Digestion
Process of breaking down food into smaller pieces using: mouth, esophagus, stomach, liver, small intestine
Mouth (mechanical)
Chewing using teeth, tongue, mouth to breakdown food
Stomach (mechanical)
Churning, storing food, creating chyme through gastric sections
Liver (mechanical)
Produces Bile stored in gallbladder and released in small intestine to digest and absorb fats and also stores glycogen
Small Intestine (mechanical)
Segmented movements (emulsification) moving the chyme and absorbing its nutrients
Esophagus (mechanical)
Peristalsis forcing bolus through esophagus into the stomach heartburn and vomiting occur around the esophagus
Peristalsis
The movement of a bolus down esophagus by waves of circular muscle contractions
Why emulsification is mechanical?
No chemical change has occurred, no broken or formed bonds.Oil has been broken down into teeny tiny droplets suspended in a hydrophilic solution
