Epithelium & Integument Flashcards
(13 cards)
Microvilli
also called brush borders main function is to increase surface area tissue
Cilia
- mobile hair-like projections
- an extension of the cytoskeleton function:
coordinated movement movement of cilia causes current to wash away particles, junk, etc (respiratory tract)
Stereocilia
very long (longer than microvilli)
non-motile microvilli rigid due to actin filaments function: secretion and absorption
found: epididymis and inner ear
Flagella
movement based using tail one per cell sperm
Zonula Occludens (Tight Junctions)
stop transport from apical or lateral domains
prevent water soluble elements from passing through
Zonula Adherens (Adhering Junctions)
mainly involved in anchoring cells together
beneath tight junctions
plaques of myosin, tropomyosin, and vinculin
Macula Adherens (Desmosomes)
has plaques on opposing membranes
cytokeratin filaments present for shearing forces
cell adhesion is mediated by desmoglein
Gap Junctions (Connexons)
mediate intercellular communication by allowing rapid spread of information
Basement Membrane
basal lamina and reticular lamina
Basal Lamina/surface
important in orienting the cell cell to cell interactions selective barrier
Basal Lamina Components
Lamina Lucida: extracellular glycoproteins
Lamina Densa: meshwork of collagen fibrils (IV)
Reticular Lamina
Produced by fibroblasts made of type I and III collagen
Simple squamous epithelium
