Equilibrium Flashcards
(7 cards)
Define Dynamic equilibrium
It’s a state of apparent repose where the forward and reverse reactions are going at equal speeds
At equilibrium
- The rate of the forward reaction is the same as the rate of the reverse reaction
- Concentrations of the the reactants and products remain constant.
- Macroscopic properties are constant
How can you tell the reversibility of a chemical equation?
The reversibility of chemical reactions can be explained in terms of the activation energy of the for/rev reactions
What is K?
K is the equilibrium constant which is calculated in mol L^-1. If K>10^3, Reaction strongly favours products. If K<10^-3, Reaction very strongly favours reactants
Le French guys principle?
If a change in conditions is made to a chemical system in equilibrium, then the system will adjust in such a way as to partially counteract the imposed change
Effects of a catalyst
Provides a lower activation energy pathway for a reaction. Thus increases for/rev reaction rates equally. Helpful in achieving equilibrium more quickly
Concentration, pressure and volume don’t affect the value of K. What factor does?
Temperature
